This attempt to combine two stories in one fails utterly. The title implies, although the text nowhere suggests, that there is a relation between the fate of running back Thomas and the decline in the fortunes of the Dallas Cowboys. Thomas, when he appeared on the professional football scene in 1970, was acclaimed as an outstanding player but within two years was stigmatized as an "emotionally disturbed misfit," largely because of his periods of total silence. With coauthor Zimmerman, a freelance writer, Thomas attempts to show why that classification was unfair, and excerpts from his journal depict a disillusioned idealistbut at a remove of almost two decades, few will care. The decline of the Cowboys is clearly a result of a series of complex factors, having nothing to do with any individual player. Photos not seen by PW.

5THE SILENT MAN OPENS UP  Oct 02, 2010 By COOL JEWEL
THIS IS A VERY NICE TELLING BY DUANE THOMAS ABOUT HIS FOOTBALL CAREER. MOST OF HIS STORY IS ABOUT HIS DAYS WITH THE COWBOYS WITH A BIT ABOUT THE REDSKINS AND CHARGERS. I REALLY ENJOYED DUANE'S STORY AND WISH THERE WAS MORE. ALSO IN THIS BOOK CO-AUTHORED BY PAUL ZIMMERMAN IS AN ANALYSIS AS TO WHY THE COWBOYS FINALLY BECAME A BAD TEAM AFTER NEATLY TWO DECADES OF TOP NOTCH TEAMS. DUANE THOMAS WAS A WEIRD BUT TALENTED PLAYER. THE DRUG RUMORS RAN RAMPANT ABOUT HIM. HE DENIES THEM BUT WHAT WAS ALL THAT WEIRD BEHAVIOR ABOUT. DUANE DOES HIS BEST TO EXPLAIN HIS BEHAVIOR AND WHAT WAS GOING ON DURING THOSE YEARS. THE COWBOYS WERE ARROGANT AND COLD HEARTED. DUANE GOES IN GREAT DETAIL AS HOW HE PERCEIVES THE ORGANIZATION. THIS BOOK IS OVER 20 YEARS OLD BUT IF YOU ARE COWBOY FAN FROM THE 70'S THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK.

5Very good job  Sep 08, 2011 By Ms. Brenda J. Cammon
I always wanted to know about Duane Thomas and now I know. He did a very good job in telling his story. I wished the NFL would have continued to work for him. He was a great football player.
